Black Folk™ Camping Trip

In 2020, 63% of campers were white; 12% were Black, 13% were Hispanic, and 7% were Asian. The annual Black Folk Camping Trip intends to change the way Black community views outdoor activities and encourage the Black community into exploring recreational options they are not accustomed to.

Encouraging the Black community to participate in camping more frequently holds profound benefits that extend beyond simple outdoor recreation. Historically, outdoor activities like camping have been predominantly associated with white culture, often leading to underrepresentation and a sense of exclusion among minorities. However, embracing camping can foster a multitude of positive outcomes for the Black Folk, both individually and collectively.

First and foremost, camping offers an opportunity for individuals to reconnect with nature, providing a reprieve from the stresses of urban life and offering moments of tranquility and reflection. In a world characterized by constant connectivity and digital distractions, spending time outdoors allows for a much-needed break, promoting mental well-being and overall happiness. For Black Folk, who may face disproportionate levels of stress and adversity due to systemic inequalities, camping can serve as a therapeutic escape, offering a chance to decompress and rejuvenate.

Moreover, engaging in outdoor activities like camping fosters a sense of empowerment and self-sufficiency. Learning outdoor skills such as setting up a tent, starting a campfire, or navigating trails not only builds confidence but also provides valuable life lessons in resilience and adaptability. For young Black individuals, particularly those growing up in urban environments, exposure to outdoor experiences can broaden horizons, instilling a sense of adventure and curiosity about the natural world.

Camping presents a unique opportunity for community building and cultural preservation. By participating in our group camping trips and other outdoor excursions, individuals can strengthen bonds with family and friends, creating lasting memories and traditions. Embracing outdoor recreation also provides a platform for celebrating cultural heritage, with opportunities to incorporate storytelling, music, and food into camping experiences, thereby reaffirming the richness and diversity of Black identity.

In essence, encouraging Black Folk to participate in camping more often not only promotes individual well-being and cultural pride but also broadens individual experiences in outdoor recreation. By embracing the outdoors as a space for connection, growth, and empowerment, we can forge a path towards a more vibrant outdoor community for generations to come.

WHAT IS CONSIDERED A "CHILD CAMPER"?
remove
add
Yes, you can bring the kids!
Anyone age 3 to 16 is considered a child. Age discretion is soley on the group organizers and you may be required to provide proof of childs age upon arrival to the camp ground.

Going on a group camping trip can be incredibly beneficial for children in numerous ways. Here are several reasons why group camping trips are good for children:

Social Development: Group camping offers children the opportunity to interact with peers in a natural, unstructured environment. They learn essential social skills such as teamwork, cooperation, communication, and conflict resolution while engaging in fun outdoor activities together.

Physical Activity: Camping typically involves a range of physical activities such as hiking, swimming, and outdoor games. Engaging in these activities promotes physical fitness, coordination, and a love for the outdoors, encouraging children to lead active lifestyles.

Educational Opportunities: Camping exposes children to various learning opportunities outside the classroom. They can learn about nature, wildlife, and ecosystems firsthand, fostering an appreciation for the environment and sparking curiosity about the natural world.

Problem-Solving Skills: In the wilderness, children often encounter challenges such as setting up tents, starting fires, or navigating trails. These experiences encourage critical thinking, resourcefulness, and resilience as children learn to overcome obstacles and adapt to new situations.

Independence and Self-Confidence: Group camping trips provide children with opportunities to take on responsibilities and make decisions independently, such as helping with meal preparation or organizing camping gear. Successfully completing tasks and overcoming challenges boosts their self-esteem and confidence.

Bonding and Friendship: Camping fosters deep connections and friendships among children as they share experiences, stories, and adventures around the campfire. These bonds formed during camping trips can be long-lasting and contribute to children's emotional well-being.

Unplugged Time: Camping offers a break from screens and technology, allowing children to disconnect from electronic devices and connect with nature and their surroundings. This unplugged time promotes mindfulness, relaxation, and mental well-being.

Family and Community Connection: Group camping trips often involve families or communities coming together, providing children with a sense of belonging and connection to their loved ones and community members. These shared experiences create lasting memories and strengthen relationships.

Overall, group camping trips offer a rich and rewarding experience for children, promoting physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development while fostering a deeper connection to nature and community.

WHAT TYPE OF CROWD WILL BE COMING?
remove
add

"Who gon' be there?" 👀

LOL, we totally get it. Trust us!

The kind & caliber of "Black Folk" we allow in our circles are the best of the best. Typically educated, young spirited and upwardly mobile professionals who only surround themselves with other motivated individuals of a like-mind.

All participants of our events are screened and we quickly refund those who give signs of a problematic nature. In other words... we simply do not welcome or give admission to the riff-raffs, thugs, ratchet, boisterous or the embarrassing folk. Only the classiest Black Folk here.

CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE CAMPSITE WE WILL BE STAYING AT?
remove
add
We will be staying at the Tillie Creek Campground at Lake Isabella, California.

There will be:
• Parking spaces for your vehicle
• Running water
• Restrooms

• Camp tables

• A park ranger on site

Tillie Creek is about a 3-hour drive north from Los Angeles. The weather will be warm & dry and there should be moderate mobile phone coverage in the area. It is nestled in oak trees on the shores of Lake Isabella, a popular destination for water activities, especially windsurfing and fishing. The 11,000-acre lake is actually a reservoir, one of California's largest, and it marks the division between the Upper Kern and Lower Kern Rivers.

When you arrive, check in with the Camp Boss and they will guide you to where you may park your vehicle and/or where the designated sleeping areas are. You may pitch your tent and camp on the ground or use your vehicle as a camper, if able to do so.

RV's: There are no hookups available for water, sewer or electric, emphasizing a more traditional camping experience at this years campsite.

IF I COME, AM I REQUIRED TO DO ALL THE ACTIVITIES WITH EVERYBODY?
remove
add
Absolutely not.

This Camping Trip is designed for those that want to get away and enjoy the comforts of the outdoors. This may include you participating with new friends, existing friends... or being a complete loner. No matter your reason, we are totally okay with it.

The entire time you are camping with us is yours and you may go out and explore as you see fit. However we do require that you let us know where you are exploring/going so that we can keep an account of all our participants for safety.

Please consider purchasing and bringing along a personal walkie talkie. The camp manager will assist you on dialing into our group frequency channel and we may check in with you from time to time as you are out exploring.

TALK TO ME ABOUT THE GROUP HIKE WE ARE ALL GOING ON?
remove
add

The group hike is our favorite activity.

Yes of course you may go off and explore the great outdoors anytime you want while we are out there. However, please make sure you're a part of our big group hike where we all go as a group.

Whether to go on a group hike or go alone depends on your personal preferences, your comfort level with hiking, and what you hope to get out of the experience. Here are some factors to consider for both options:

Going Alone

Freedom: Going alone gives you the freedom to set your own pace, choose your own route, and take breaks whenever you want.

Introspection: Solo hiking can provide a sense of solitude and introspection, allowing you to connect more deeply with nature and yourself.

Flexibility: You can be more flexible with your schedule and itinerary when hiking alone, without having to coordinate with others.

Personal Challenge: Solo hiking can be a personal challenge, allowing you to test your skills, endurance, and self-reliance.

Our Group Hike

Safety: Hiking in our group will provide safety in numbers, especially on challenging trails or in unfamiliar terrain.

Social Interaction: Our group hike is a great way to meet new people, socialize, and share experiences.

Learning Opportunities: Hiking with other Black Folk can provide opportunities to learn from more experienced hikers, whether it's about navigation, outdoor skills, or local flora and fauna.

Motivation: Our unity hikes can be motivating, as you're less likely to cancel if others are counting on you to join.

Consider the level of difficulty of the hike, your experience level, and any safety concerns. If you're new to hiking or unsure about the trail, going with our group might be a safer option. However, if you're an experienced hiker looking for solitude or a personal challenge, going alone could be a rewarding experience. Ultimately, choose the option that aligns best with your preferences and goals.

OHV? ARE WE GOING OFF-ROAD EXPORING?
remove
add
Yes! We are. Do you own a Jeep, 4x4 or SUV?
Off-Highway Vehicles (commonly known as OHV Trailing) is also something we do, too. Overlanding is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal. The difference for us is, instead of spending the night out in the open plains in our vehicles, we return to basecamp after exploring the trail.

If you have a Polaris ROV, a 4-wheeler ATV or a truck/SUV that can handle the off-road trail then gas it up and bring it along. Be sure you have your walkie radio (FRS or GMRS) to stay in communication with the group as we traverse the OHV trail on an adventure you'll never forget.

HOW ABOUT MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDING?
remove
add

Yup! So be sure to strap your mountain bike to your car and bring it along.

Ripping along trails offers an electrifying blend of adrenaline, nature, and camaraderie. Riders are drawn to the thrill of navigating rugged terrain, feeling the rush of speeding down descents, and conquering obstacles. The trails wind through stunning landscapes inaccessible by road, providing a deep connection with nature and a sense of freedom. As you hone your skills, you'll find a supportive community, sharing tips and camaraderie both on and off the trail. With the added benefits of physical exercise, stress relief, and evolving equipment technology, mountain biking delivers a dynamic and rewarding outdoor experience in a single thrilling package.
